Choosing the right equipment to tackle a shoot is essential in order to achieve the required level of success.

The Camera: Whether shooting with a compact or hybrid or DSLR you will want to have a camera with the right selection of features that you need. Megapixels is perhaps the most emphasized feature of the modern camera with the marketing rule that the more pixels you have the better. This is a certainly true is the intention is to produce large prints but even a 5MP camera can render images good enough for decent A4 sized prints. The higher resolution cameras do however provide more cropping options.

The Lens: There is a multitude of lens available for DSLR cameras. This what brings added flexibility to such cameras. However, not all lenses are equal and there are technical imperfections that need to be understood when choosing which lens to buy. The lens on compact cameras can be more restrictive but it has its benefits too.

The Flashgun: Perhaps by some one of the most underrated piece of photographic equipment, the flashgun usually brings far more power and flexibility than a camera's built in flash. The is the added benefit of wireless flash control for some systems.

The Tripod: With the availability of image stabilisation within cameras (or lenses) need for tripods under certain circumstances is no longer necessary. For studio work, macro, wildlife, and night photography, then the need for a good sturdy tripod is essential. There are tripods designed with travel in mind that are lighter than standard but composed of materials to maintain the rigidity.

The Camera Bag: To provide protection and an easy way to transport the camera along with its accessories a decent camera bag should be high on the shopping list after purchasing a camera. Not only would a decent bag protect against knocks but will also protect again heavy rainfall or even dusty environments (if designed to do so). The two main types are the over the shoulder or the rucksack with a third, the sling type a compromise between the two former.

The Digital Media Viewer: When travelling and without a laptop, the digital media viewer comes into its own. They tend to be able to read from a variety of memory cards and store the images on their large internal hard drives. These units take up less space than a laptop and can be used for playing movies and music as well as photo viewing to keep the user entertained on their travels.
