Sony announces the Alpha 500 and Alpha 550 DSLRs
Two powerful, feature-packed DSLR cameras from Sony make it easier
than ever to capture beautiful pictures, carefree family portraits,
stunning holiday memories and action-packed scenes.

The DSLR-α500 (12.3 megapixels) and DSLR-α550 (14.2
megapixels) are packed with advanced Sony technology that combine the
spontaneity and freedom of Live View shooting with generous
possibilities to realise your creative vision.

EA Comments: For users of the A350 DSLR the
A550 looks to by the true upgrade path rather than the earlier announced
A380. The full flexibility of the A350 is maintained with the added
enhancements of the Exmor CMOS sensor, additional live view mode and
higher speed continuous shooting. Hopefully operational speed has been
increased to improve the responsiveness of the camera in comparison to
the A350. A dual format memory card option has been provided but at the
expense of the Compact Flash storage. SDHC memory storage seems to be
becoming the storage method of choice with of course Sony's proprietary
Memory Stick Duo. There does not seem to be any change to the optical
viewfinder.
Sony announces the Alpha 850 full frame DSLR
The new DSLR-α850 from Sony offers serious
photo enthusiasts a step up to the creative possibilities of full-frame
imaging at a compelling price.

Ruggedly built for unflinching pro-style handling and
performance, the α850 shares the same 24.6 megapixel sensor and
virtually all features of the flagship DSLR-α900, introduced last year.
Like its full-frame sibling, the α850 fully exploits the creative
possibilities of the α family of lenses that includes premium full-frame
optics from Carl Zeiss, plus five high-performance G Lens models.
At the heart of the α850 is a full frame 24.6
effective megapixel Exmor™ CMOS sensor that captures flawless,
detail-packed images with vibrant, lifelike colours and fine textures.

EA Comments: Are
we seeing the end of the megapixel race?
Looking at the latest camera releases there has not been a boost
in the resolution provided as seen in previous years. Most cameras now
feature at least 12 megapixels but there are some which offer a slightly
lower 10 megapixel resolution. The Panasonic LX3, and the Canon S90 and
G11 are a case in point. These are high end compacts with the serious or
advanced amateur photographer in mind but optimised to produce lower
noise images than usually found on a compact. For many purposes 10
megapixels is more than enough for most people and for the serious
photographer the overall quality of the results is more important than
having the highest resolution possible. With the demand for higher
resolution reduced, we may look forward to seeing improvements in image
processing and more useful and innovative features. EA.

Canon
announces the PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera
Canon today announces the new PowerShot SX20 IS – a digital compact
camera with a 20x wide-angle super zoom lens – enabling photo
enthusiasts to get closer to their chosen subject. The Canon PowerShot
SX20 IS’s 2.5 inch vari-angle PureColor LCD display coupled with the
full manual controls will allow photographers an even greater range of
creative options. The versatile camera, a successor to the SX10 IS, now
features HD video (720p) to ensure you capture video in the sharpest
detail.
Read here for more information on the
Canon PowerShot SX20 IS.
Canon
announces the PowerShot S90 Digital Camera
The PowerShot S90 continues the PowerShot S-series tradition with
impressive, fully manual features that deliver excellent image quality
and user experience, including: Canon’s Dual Anti-Noise System with an
f/2.0 wide-angle lens, a 3.0 inch PureColor II LCD display and an
intuitive new lens Control Ring.
Read here for more information on the
Canon PowerShot S90.
EA Comments: It's great to see Canon
re-introducing the S series digital compact. Having owned one of the
older models in the past, they are a very capable series of cameras in a
compact form. The all important RAW format is provided which will help
to ensure that every drop of quality is got out of every image. I would
of preferred to see a slightly wider angle zoom but with an aperture
starting from f/2.0 it is hard to complain. Looks like a good camera to
travel with. Definitely a camera for review.
Canon announces the Digital Ixus 200 IS and the
Digital Ixus 120 IS
The Digital IXUS 200 IS gives you ultimate experience in fingertip
control with Canon’s first-ever touch-screen technology in a camera,
while the Digital IXUS 120 IS is Canon’s slimmest ever, wide-angle
Digital IXUS.

Read here for more information on the
Canon Ixus 200
IS and the Ixus 120 IS.
Canon
announces the PowerShot G11 Digital Camera
Key innovations on the PowerShot G11 include a high-resolution vari-angle
LCD screen and greatly improved noise reduction. Canon’s new Dual
Anti-Noise System combines a high sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel image
sensor with Canon’s enhanced DIGIC 4 image processing technology to
greatly reduce noise and increase quality equal to 2-stops. The Dual
Anti-Noise System allows photographers to capture full resolution images
- using up to ISO 3200 - in difficult low-light conditions. This makes
it easier than ever to take stunning low-light portraits or retain the
ambient light detail with late-night landscapes. Motion blur can also be
substantially reduced.
Read here for more information on the
Canon PowerShot G11.
EA Comments: Looks like the G
series camera is back and fully restored to its full glory as it seems
better designed with the serious photographer in mind. The 10 megapixel
sensor resolution is a little lower than the now standard 12 megapixel
offerings but this not doubt because the camera is
optimised for image quality (lower image noise). Built in neutral
density filter is a welcome addition for those who like to take long
exposure shots with the aperture wide open in daylight conditions.
