Macau neighbours Hong Kong and it is best known
for its casinos. Although Macau is a small place, there is more to see
there than casinos. There are numerous temples, some rather nice parks
and some nice views.
Ruins of St.
Pauls: The most famous of churches in
Macau, the facade is basically all that remains of the once magnificent
building. This is one of the main tourist attractions and it is in easy
walking distance from Senado Square. The ruins still make an interesting
photo and there are many locations in the surrounding area to take
photos of it.
The Macau Tower:
This services both as a convention centre and a place of entertainment.
It stands 338 metres high but the main observation deck is located
some 220 metres from ground level.
There are extra activities that visitors can take
up during a visit. Bungy jumping, climbing the mast, skyjump and the
long ironwalk. I tried the skywalk, which you wear a harness connected
to an overhead rail system and follow an instructor/guide around the
main outer rim of the tower. The views from out there are fantastic but
cameras (or and device) are not permitted due to the danger of dropping
them on people below. The instructor carries a camera to record the
visit.
Senado Square:
Sooner or later everybody ends up at the square. The Portuguese
influence is very obvious here both in the way the street is paved and
by the surrounding buildings. Although this area is essentially a
mixture of shops and restaurants, there are many photographic
opportunities. A number of events and celebrations are hosted here
though out the year.
Guia Hill: The
highest hill is easy to find as it's the one with the lighthouse on it.
At the base of the hill is the Flora Garden which displays an assortment
of flowers (and there is a mini zoo there too). There is a path leading
up to the top of Guia Hill or it can be reached by a cable car service.
It is well worth walking up as scenic views are more easily captured.
Next to the lighthouse there is a the Chapel of
Our Lady of Guia and a good viewing point to look down on the
surrounding area.
Kun Lam Tong Temple:
This Buddhist temple is away from the main tourist
areas but is worth while a visit. The architecture, the hanging joss
sticks and the general atmosphere makes interesting and thought
provoking photos.
